In the back room in the office
I see the men gathered round their table
with ink from a whale and paper from a tree
they write a letter for progress, progress
so I sit in the corner taking minutes from the meeting
they pay me so I have to
I stare out the window and watch the trees swaying
they're planning to cut you I think

Sometimes I put on my backpack
and head out to the wilder parts of Austin
or at least I did until they put up a fense and a sign

so I look at the surveyors instead of the scenery
as they stake the heart of the landscape
