Maybe by Spring is a moment of despair mixed with hope for what might be later on my journey. Maybe just around the corner, all these things will be memory and I'll finally be free.
I wrote this song when I was feeling out of place and out of sorts but oddly, just fine with that. I was feeling sassy about my strangeness and floating right by all that was trying to pull me in or pull me down.
I freaked out and broke up with the one I loved but realized my mistake too late. I had to accept that I'd missed the boat and took comfort in knowing that there still was a magical place, if only in my mind, between night and day, between then and now, that I could always love my love.
Someone who's very familiar with the music of SJ Tucker once asked me why I never write any silly songs (she has many). I didn't have much of a reply except to say that that's just not where I've been coming from. I was inspired by the question though and happened upon one of Webster's definitions of silly which read something like "anything that lacks in sense". Oh. Well I know a lot about that...
My only song on piano, I wrote this song after watching the news one day. Feeling totally appalled and slightly sarcastic I made my way to the keys and this song poured out.
I knew a girl in Kerrville TX who I thought was a fellow artist and on the same page. I learned pretty quickly that she was not. As she showed up to the local coffeehouse, bragging excitedly about how she'd smoked crystal meth all weekend (for the first time) and how awesome it was. She said it was her muse. I was dating someone at the time who brought me into the world of underground hip-hop and poetry slams. Having grown up a huge fan of hip hop, it was easy for me to slide over to that side of things and write this piece about the Girl around the way.
